Vivant Skin Care Co-Founder James E. Fulton Jr., M.D., Ph.D., 1940-2013

Skin care icon passed away July 4th after lengthy battle with colon cancer

The world of clinical skin care lost an innovator and a true pioneer when Dr. James Edwin Fulton, Jr. died last week. He was 73. Surrounded by his wife of 44 years, Vivant Skin Care President Sara M. Fulton, daughter and CEO Kelly Fulton-Kendrick, daughter Susan Fulton-Arregui, son James Edwin Fulton, III and son George Jacob Fulton, Fulton succumbed to colon cancer at Mercy Hospital in Miami.

“Jim devoted his life to dermatology and his passing will leave a void in the world of skin care,” offers Sara Fulton. “He achieved much during his career, but his greatest contributions may have been the hope and confidence he instilled in his acne patients.”
“We are devastated by the loss of our company founder and my father, but are determined to carry on his legacy,” says Fulton-Kendrick.

Born in Ottumwa, IA to Alice Hermann Fulton and James Sr. (a one-time CEO of Cracker Jack), Dr. Fulton’s interest in dermatology stemmed from the acne struggles he endured as a pre-teen and throughout adulthood. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from Tulane University in 1965, and while there his academic achievements led to his induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Phi Beta Kappa Society. While in residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Fulton met his close friend and mentor Dr. Albert Kligman; together they co-developed Retin-A®, a topical form of vitamin A.  At the invitation of Dr. Phillip Frost, he relocated to South Florida and earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry under the noted dermatologist Harvey Blank, M.D. from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Together, Dr. Fulton and Dr. Blank developed a stabilized benzoyl peroxide gel (Panoxyl®). In addition, Dr. Fulton developed topical erythromycin (E-Gel®).

In the early 1970s with his wife Sara, Dr. Fulton launched a successful chain of 12 acne clinics called Acne Healthcare Centers, opened the Acne Research Institute and developed and manufactured a line of patented skin care products under the AHC and Face Up brands in their FDA-approved manufacturing facilities. During this time he invented a high-speed diamond fraise for dermabrasion, was the first to use aestheticians in a medical office and developed a paramedical aesthetician training program.

In 1990, Dr. Fulton opened JEF Medical Group, a cosmetic surgery and dermatology practice where he pioneered fat transfer and laser surgery. He was the first to use hyperbaric oxygen chambers for post-surgical recovery. In addition, Dr. Fulton and Sara co-founded Vivant Skin Care in 1990, a clinical skin care line rooted in Fulton’s patented vitamin A therapies.

A popular international speaker and teacher, he authored the definitive book on acne, Acne Rx, and published more than 300 medical articles, the most recent ones being released earlier this year in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology and presented at the Skin of Color Seminar Series in New York City and the Orlando Dermatology Aesthetic & Clinical Conference.

He actively split time between his research lab at the Vivant Skin Care headquarters in Miami Lakes and Flores Dermatology in Coral Gables, where he continued to see patients until a week before his passing.

Dr. Fulton served as mentor and role model for countless leaders in dermatology and aesthetics across the nation. Most recently he was volunteer faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Dermatology and part of the internship program at St. Thomas University.

Dr. Fulton volunteered his dermatology services to His House Children’s Home, a private, non-profit, faith-based foster children organization, to which he provided no-charge medical treatment to the children and hosted a yearly Thanksgiving luncheon for the children.

He was most proud of his beloved wife Sara who helped him with his Ph.D., and worked with him in research and in the medical office. She always attended medical meetings with him and helped with his teaching projects. Dr. Fulton always told her he couldn't have done what he did without her.

Among his noteworthy achievements were creating more than 50 original skin care formulations, qualifying as a Full Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, membership in the American Society of Lipo Suction Surgery and election to the Dermatology Foundation’s Leader Society.

He is survived by wife Sara Fulton, brother Andy Fulton, daughter Susan Fulton-Arregui, son-in-law Richard Arregui, son James E. Fulton, III, daughter-in-law Isabelle Baranda-Fulton, daughter Kelly Fulton-Kendrick, son-in-law John J. Kendrick, III, son George J. Fulton, daughter-in-law Alexandra Hodges-Fulton, nine grandchildren and the 1000s of acne patients in whose lives he made a clear difference.

In lieu of flowers, the Fulton family is asking for donations to be made to the Dr. Robert Hsia Memorial Fund, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, 1600 NW 10th Ave., Suite 2023-A, Miami, FL 33136. An open memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the St. Stephens Church, 2750 McFarland Rd, Coconut Grove, FL 33133.

    Dear Colleagues
I regret to inform you of the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. James E. Fulton, M.D., Ph.D. Jim was a resident in our Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery in the late 1960’s and a longtime member of our faculty. He is exceedingly well known for his significant research and kind care of acne sufferers. He remained a lifelong learner and frequently attended our patient planning conferences, grand rounds and Miami Dermatology Society meetings. He and our residents both greatly enjoyed his lectures on innovations in Dermatology.
His lovely wife, Sarah, told me that he was working on at least 10 papers at the time of his passing.

    He will be greatly missed.

    Sincerely Yours,

I had the immense honor and privilege of meeting and being treated by this extraordinary human being and physician. The short time under his care solved what over 10 years with countless dermatologists and treatments couldn't. You will forever be missed and adored by so many like me who have been changed by your genius, professionalism, authenticity and humor, especially my niece who’s still waiting for you to return her nose that you would steal between your fingers.

RIP Dr Fulton you are very loved!

    Dear Sara -

We are so sorry to learn of Jim's passing. It's hard to believe - he was such a lively and enthusiastic man, funny, warm, generous...I will never forget the first time I met him. He was standing on our deck in Miami Beach, and as I walked outside to greet him, he looked up at me and exclaimed, "Wow! Perioral fluoride rash!" The amazing thing is, he was the first and only person to diagnose it, and he did it from 20 feet away. Everyone else was testing me for lupus. I quit using fluoride toothpaste and it went away. So in addition to the adjectives above, I'd also have to concur with the many who knew he was brilliant.

I know you will miss him. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

    Xoxo Janet

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Fulton long way before my skin care career. He was a close friend of my mother's. Once I started school, I would stay with the Fulton family when I was in So Cal. I started lecturing with him about ethnic skin in his seminars before I was licensed..

I didn't know this until now, but he was only a little over 8 years older than me. I knew he was battling cancer, and he looked frail the last few times my staff and I hooked up with him. I was hoping he'd beat this.

I knew him very well, and lectured with him many times over the years. I knew how ill he'd been and just heard he passed away. His daughter is a member of this group and I'm contacting her now. He was much loved and appreciated by estheticians and acne clients alike and will be missed.

  51. To Sara & the 'kids,'

My sympathies to all of you on the loss of Jim.

You may remember I spent a decade (~1993-2003) regularly providing my innovative propofol ketamine (PK) anesthesia to his cosmetic surgery patients.

Among all the Newport Beach cosmetic (& plastic) surgeons, Jim was among the earliest PK adopters. He recognized the multiple advantages for his patients - not the least of which was the elimination of postoperative nausea & vomiting (PONV) & dramatically improved safety over other sedation techniques.

In addition to extolling the virtues of PK anesthesia to his surgical colleagues, Jim always graciously permitted other interested anesthesiologists to visit me in his OR to learn my PK technique.

Jim also generously cited my anesthesia technique in virtually all of his cosmetic surgery publications between 1996-2003. In December 1997, he welcomed the addition of BIS brain monitoring to make PK a numerically reproducible technique.

We lost touch upon his relocation to Florida from California but occasionally saw each other at trade shows.

He will be remembered & missed,

    Barry L. Friedberg, MD

  54. Hello from VanDe- Dear Fulton Family and all who loved the Doc

I'm so devastated upon hearing the news of the Doc's passing..I always called him Doc. He was really on my mind the last couple of weeks and I was seriously going to call to say hello, but we are all guilty of putting things off...I got busy and said to myself, I will give a call"next week". Advice for all of us..tell someone you miss them, tell someone you love them, forgive someone..whatever you need to say..as time is way, way too short! I've known Doc since 1999 where at that time I moved from San Francisco and been in the skin care industry for over 20 years at that time. I thought I knew alot about skin and beauty, but knew NOTHING until I worked with the Doc. I worked at the clinic, took his classes, helped teach his classes, sold tons of Vivant to hundreds of clients.I learned everything I know about skin from him, and I pass that knowledge on to all I come in contact with as a Medical Aesthetician. I speak about him "everyday" to every client that comes into my treatment room...his teachings and words became my words. I owe all my skin and acne knowledge to Dr. Fulton, and I feel that he is there in spirit as I speak of him and Vivant throughtout the day. He was a pioneer, and inovator and the GURU of Skin Care and a mentor to me..he is the one that everyone copied,(or tried to!)He was never too busy to teach and educate the staff and the patients, went above and beyond, and really cared about the patient and had a forever passion for the skin. He left the $$$ dollar signs behind his eyes, not in front, and that is always the real key to lasting success...To see him lecture was amazing...and you wonder..where does this all come from. He will be sorely missed and my heart felt sympathy goes out to you the family, and the Vivant family as well...Miss you Doc, Love VanDe

Dr. Fulton had a tremendous impact on my life. I met him at his clinic as a patient. He cleared my acne and sparked my interest in Skincare which led me to become an Esthetician. I was blessed to participate in his Paramedical training course, helped 1000s of clients over the years to clear their skin and regain self esteem through his teaching. I often shared what I learned from Dr Fulton with my students. I am forever greatful for Dr. Fulton, his wife Sara and the tremendous contributions they made to the world of esthetics.

  87. Dear Sara,

I am deeply saddened and very shocked upon hearing this tragic news. My heart aches! I wish I had seen Jim one more time! I feel I owe my life to this brilliant scientist and amazing mentor. He opened the door to the beautiful world of cosmetic dermatology for me. I never forget how thrilled, excited and proud I was when he accepted me to his fellowship program and how fast I left everything behind in Houston to start my fellowship with him as soon as I could, and how nice you welcomed me when I first saw you at the office. I truly believe that it is because of him that I have had a successful practice since I finished my fellowship to this date. I always enjoyed his sense of humor when he called me "Cookie" and I felt really proud when he called me "Botox Queen". I will always miss him.

My sincere condolences to you, Susan, James, Kelly, George, and all family and friends for this significant loss! May his soul rest in peace!

    With lots of love,

My deepest sympathy to The Fulton Family!

I am saddened to hear for the loss of the greatest teacher I have ever met in my over 30 years of being a passioned Skin Care Therapist. When I received a simple post card inviting everybody to an Advanced Aesthetic Training Course in 2007. I thought this would be good for me to polish off my deficit in the English language .I did not know that I will meet my future mentor who changed much more in my professional life then spelling words properly.

Dr. Fulton thought me as a professional a different level in performing a facial and also providing the best skin care possible to my clients.I learned so much more then I ever received in previous taken classes. I can truly say I became a better Skin Care Therapist. I am honored to have met him and I am very proud to work with his amazing skin care products for many years to come.

    Dear Kelly,
I hope you get my message? I was devastatingly shocked to read about the loss of Dr Fulton, your beloved Dad. I had no idea he was ill. I am so very sorry to hear this horribly sad news. My heart goes out to You and your family. i can only imagine the deep sadness you are feeling today. I have walked in your shoes. My Dad was also a doctor, a teacher, a mentor and touched so many lives as so did your Dad. Dr. Fulton was an excellent teacher, mentor, and physician.
I remember going to my first Jacob Javits medical convention held by the International Esthetic organization back in 2004, ( I think). I walked into his Acne class and was instantly drawn in to his lecture. He explained everything so well. I was immediately hooked. I followed Dr. Fulton wherever he would lecture, Las Vegas, and primarily the east coast. I live in CT). I became a VIVANT "groupie" if you will. He was such an amazing speaker. I soaked in every word. I loved learning from him and I will miss him for the knowledge base he had, for the gift of teaching, for his easy demeanor, for the "ADD" (attention deficit disorder) jokes he use to tease about himself...he just had so much wealth of knowledge that he just wanted to tell it all to those in his classes. He would go off on medical tangents. I loved it!!! Gosh.... I just can't believe he is gone.

My condolences go out to you all!

Please know you are in my thoughts. May time heal your pain and the emptiness you all feel now. May Vivant live on in the memory and honor of your Dad, Dr. Fulton!

    Fondly with hugs,
    Lori Goldenberg,RN

PS: I opened up my own practice in 2011. Your Dad was an inspiration and motivator who believed in me that I could have a successful practice. I have him to thank for giving me an extra push in that direction.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jim Fulton long way before my skin care career. He was a close friend of my mother's. Once I started school, I would stay with the Fulton family when I was in So Cal. I started lecturing with him about ethnic skin in his seminars before I was licensed.

I didn't know this until now, but he was only a little over 8 years older than me. I knew he was battling cancer, and he looked frail the last few times my staff and I hooked up with him. I was hoping he'd beat this.

I also had the pleasure and honor being with him- training and the time he called and requested to come by my office and look at all the treatments I was doing. Spent some time with him at his office. He was showing me his acne techniques. We would often run into each other walking to and or from the hotel-Vegas convention- having long talks and walks. Sharing personally information. I was so inspired by him. LOVED him! Loved his passion. I knew he was ill and was near his last days....so sad today. He left the world a better place with his passion. RIP Dr. James E Fulton.

Between him and Estee Lauder - I can honestly say...an amazing cosmetic / skincare journey!

I feel with the passing of Dr. Fulton and the passing last year of Dr. Kligman, the first great era of Cosmeceutical Research has ended. I am so very grateful to these two dynamic researchers who developed the ingredients for Acne and Photoaging that still influence our industry today. I am personally indebted to both for their contribution to my success as a aesthetician and the role they played in elevating our industry to the high standard it is today.

In addition to Retin A, Jim Fulton developed the first esthetiticans could use (vitamin A propionate), as well as water-based benzoyl peroxide gel, topical erythromycin and non-comedogenic skin care as we know it today. We owe him a huge debt.

  168. From Molly R Salyard, RN via email:

I am heartbroken to hear of DR Fulton's death - I have helped sooooo many people due to his mission to educate people that acne can be controlled and / or eradicated when all his education is used.

I was just in Boulder CO and finished the Denver TRI for A cure Triathlon in honor of my mom who died of pancreatic CA- sadly DR Fulton is now part of that effort.

While most believe Acne does not kill like cancer, I disagree I know it kills confidence and human spirit. I recently saw my nephew had developed acne and KNEW - I could Help - and I also knew addressing the topic would likely be embarrassing and possibly offend and make him respond in anger to my comments. I said, Molly do you love him enough to allow and accept his anger? Well indeed he told his mom (my sister) and I was banned from the topic.

In the meantime, I tried to stop the order I had sent to them including the book and BP 10% - fearing more "issues". I arrived home to be greeted by multiple requests from every teen's mom in the Boulder CO area, along with my sisters requests.

Apparently, when the package arrived, my nephew actually ASKED if he could have the product (BP 10%) and my sister (a genetic Freak with ZERO skin issues EVER) she read the book and this last visit both teens had white bed linings due to their new Vivant skin plan. I was relieved as it was risky to offer help for acne when it was NOT asked for, especially since both niece and nephew were seeing a dermatologist. I imagine assuming his credentials trumped mine.

Sadly, the MD they saw was given the same 'help' I was given decades ago - antibiotics - and an RX for BP without any education and from what I observed, I was saddened that there had been zero progress treating acne as without education, without a passion for the spirit killing effects of acne diminishing its confidence killing as if it does not matter. I tell friends clients and family, if you are seeing a Dermatologist for acne, inquire if he/ she or someone they love has had serious acne? Move on...

Vivant lives on thru Dr Fulton - I always joked - Tom Cruise could walk by and I would not notice - but if DR Fulton walked by I would leap to my feet to meet this amazing researcher Dr and person!

    Sincerely,

    Molly R Salyard,RN

Dr. Fulton was the brilliant scientist, the remarkable practitioner and surprising person, the humanist and harmoniously developed personality which scale are fully visible only at distance. But we will remember James first of all as friend. We thank God for that time that we could communicate with James. We grieve together with you and we remember James in Russia.

  177. My name is Jo Prabhu. I moved my family all the way from India to find a miracle cure for my ACNE and can never forget how Dr. Fulton changed my life! After many rejections from Dermatologists and Cosmetic Surgeons in Beverly Hills, CA, he took me on as his first olive-skinned patient! I will forever be grateful for his genius, his ground-breaking products, incredibly gifted hands and for the hope and confidence he restored in me and thousands of other patients I was privileged to meet. You were the God I needed and no one can replace you, Dr. Jim. I am so very sorry you are gone, but you gave me back my life and I will never stop telling the world about you!
